What the Jersey Athletics Association Does
The Jersey Athletics Association is the national governing body for athletics on Jersey. Its core purpose is to promote, develop, and enhance athletic activity across the island, ensuring that people of all ages and abilities can participate in and benefit from the sport.
Our Mission
The Association exists to grow athletics participation, from grassroots engagement to high-performance competition. We support athletes from the earliest stages of their athletic journey, encourage lifelong involvement in running, jumping, and throwing disciplines, and provide pathways for progression to higher levels of competition.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
1. Organising Competitions and Squads
We coordinate Jersey’s squads for Island Games, Commonwealth Games and Youth Commonwealth Games, agreeing Performance Indicators and selecting Team Managers for the squads.
2. Supporting Clubs and Athletes
Affiliated clubs and their members receive practical support, guidance, and resources to help them grow and thrive. The Association fosters a strong club network where athletes can access coaching, training facilities, and structured programmes.
3. Performance and Development Pathways
We are committed to helping athletes unlock their potential. Through structured development pathways, performance initiatives, and targeted support programmes, athletes have the opportunity to progress from local competition to international events.
4. Coaching, Officiating, and Volunteering
The growth of athletics relies on passionate coaches, skilled officials, and dedicated volunteers. The Association provides guidance on coaching and officiating opportunities for those who support the sport behind the scenes.
5. Youth Engagement and Inclusion
Encouraging young people to take part in athletics is a cornerstone of our work. The Association supports youth programmes that introduce children to the sport in fun, inclusive environments, helping to build confidence, fitness, and a lifelong love of athletics.
6. Safeguarding and Welfare
We prioritise the welfare of all participants. Dedicated safeguarding guidance and policies are in place to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone involved in the sport.
7. Records, Recognition, and Celebration
The Association maintains records of outstanding performances across disciplines and age groups. We also celebrate achievement and contribution to the sport through annual awards and recognition programmes.
